Tony Howard once said "If India was the Jewel in the Crown of the British Empire, the remote North-East of that country is its Hidden Jewel"
True to his words, it still is a Hidden Jewel, which still remains unexplored till today.
The Land of Seven Sisters comprising the North Eastern Sates of India which consist of seven states namely : Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
Before British Raj or Empire they are all independent and their integration comes only during the British Empire. When India Became independent from the British Empire, in 1947 only three staes are there Manipur and Tripura are princely states and the greater landmass Assam province was under direct British Rule with its capital in Shillong. In a decade after independence of India, four more states carved out from the Assam. Nagaland was formed in 1963, after that Meghalaya evolved in 1972, Mizoram became a Union Territory in 1972 but achived the statehood along with Aruncachal Pradesh in 1987 and thus the Seven Sisters was born but the name : Land of Seven Sisters was origianlly coined by Jyoti Prasad Saikia, a journalist in Tripura in a radio talk at theinauguration of New States in January 1972, which has later been compiled to the book called Land of Seven Sisters, the book is about the interdependence and commoness of the Seven Sister States. It has been primarily because of this publication, that the word Land of Seven Sisters is still used as a term defining the North-East of India.
Assam is the gateway through which the sister states are connected to the mainland. Tripura, a virtual enclave almost surrounded by Bangladesh, strongly depends on Assam. Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh depend on Assam for their internal communications. Manipur and Mizoram's contacts with the main body of India are through Assam's Barak Valley.
Main industries in this region are Tea, Oil(Crude) and Natural Gas, Silk, and Bamboo Handicrafts.
